Cederstrom serves as umpire crew chief at World Series
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Gary Cederstrom will be the umpire crew chief at the World Series.
Major League Baseball announced the seven-man crew Monday. The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals play Game 1 on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
Bill Welke will call balls and strikes in the opener. Welke, Mark Carlson and Jim Wolf drew their first World Series assignments. The crew includes Mike Winters, Mike Everitt and Alfonso Marquez.
Welke joins older brother Tim as only the second set of brothers to umpire at the World Series. John and Mark Hirschbeck also did it.
Wolf is the brother of major league pitcher Randy Wolf, who played for Detroit this season.
Everitt will be the replay official in New York for the first two games. He will then switch places at Game 3 for the rest of the Series.
Cederstrom is calling this third World Series, and first as crew chief.
