Cardinals showing interest in free agent Price

The St. Louis Cardinals are down a starting pitcher for 2016 with right-hander Lance Lynn recently undergoing Tommy John surgery. 

While the Cardinals were expected to be on the lookout for another starting pitcher, few expected the team to make a big splash in the free-agency market. 

That, however, could be changing as St. Louis is one of a handful of teams interested in free-agent pitching prize David Price, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. 

Also according to Rosenthal, the Toronto Blue Jays might not be as involved in the bidding for the free agent lefty as the long-term, high money contract might be out of character for the team. 

For the Cardinals, adding Price would certainly help the team take itself to the next level with an already formable pitching rotation that includes Adam Wainwright and other top-notch, young pitchers. With several St. Louis pitchers -- such as Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales -- slowed by injuries in 2015, it would make sense to add some depth in the rotation. 

Price is coming off another dominant season between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays where he threw for a 2.45 ERA in 32 starts, 220.1 innings pitched along with a 1.076 WHIP. The Cardinals could be an intriguing match for Price as it is close to his hometown of Nashville, Tenn. Also, the Cardinals are coming off a 100-win season that was ended by the Chicago Cubs in the NLDS, giving Price one of his best options at obtaining his first World Series ring.
