Cardinals' Carpenter passing along lessons he learned from Twins' Hunter

When Matt Carpenter was coming up in the baseball world, he developed a relationship with the Minnesota Twins' Torii Hunter.

According to Cardinals.com, the duo would train together and Hunter would give Carpenter advice on what to expect both on and off the field.

"I've been [mentoring] hundreds of players you guys don't know about. And that's what I do," Hunter said. "I've learned a lot. … So I try to give back to these young guys, and some apply it to their careers and some are kind of like, 'forget it.' And you can tell the guys that are hungry, and Matt Carpenter is definitely my No. 1 guy."

Now, Carpenter has established himself as a Major League veteran and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny see his third baseman taking on a mentorship role of his own.

"It's a responsibility, I think," Matheny said.

And it's a responsibility that Hunter hopes Carpenter passes on and that someone else will pass on as well.

"Now he's doing the same things he saw you do, and that's what it's all about," Hunter said. "Each one, teach one. Once you give it to somebody ... you can better believe they're going to do the same."
