Cantu adds to season-opening hit, RBI streak mark

Jorge Cantu hit a run-scoring double in the fifth inning Thursday night, extending his major league record by giving him 10 straight games to open the season with at least a hit and an RBI.

The Marlins third baseman lofted a long fly ball to right-center field, allowing Hanley Ramirez to score from second. Ramirez had moved to second one pitch earlier, after Aaron Harang threw a wild pitch and went to a full count against Cantu.

The record dates to 1920, when RBIs became an official statistic. Entering this season, the mark had been eight straight by George Kelly of the 1921 New York Giants.

Including last season, Cantu has 14 consecutive games with a hit and an RBI, the longest string since Mike Piazza went 15 straight from June 14-July 2, 2000.
