Braves trade reliever John Cornely to Red Sox

The Atlanta Braves traded minor-league reliever John Cornley to the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations on Wednesday, the Red Sox have announced.

The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was immediately optioned to the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket, R.I.

Cornley was drafted by the Braves in the 15th round in 2011.

While he holds a minor-league career 2.94 earned run average and .198 opponent batting average, he's struggled in relief appearances in the minors this season, lugging a 4.42 earned run average and only capitalizing upon one of four save opportunities.

In his only career major-league appearance, which occurred earlier this season, Cornley gave up four earned runs in an inning's work.
