Brantley has 2-run hit in season debut as Indians top Royals

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani hit a home run for the third straight game and the Los Angeles Angels rallied from an early six-run deficit to beat Oakland.

The two-way star from Japan connected for a long, solo drive in the second inning. The ball landed in the rocks beyond the center field wall after traveling 449 feet and was measured with a 112.3 mph exit velocity according to Statcast, the hardest-hit and longest of Ohtani's three major league homers.

Ohtani, who is batting .462 (6 for 13) with six RBIs at home, drew a walk on four pitches with the bases loaded to pull the Angels within 8-7 in the fifth.

The 23-year-old is scheduled to pitch Sunday - he won his first big league start last weekend against the A's. It's uncertain if he'll be the designated hitter on Saturday and try to extend his homer streak, a day before he starts.

Jim Johnson (1-0) got the win. Blake Treinen (0-1) took the loss for the A's, who hit five home runs.

ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 3, 14 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Pedro Alvarez hit a grand slam in the 14th inning, Manny Machado homered twice and Baltimore beat the Yankees after New York saw four players forced to make early exits.

Yankees starter CC Sabathia left with hip soreness, star catcher Gary Sanchez limped off with a possible leg cramp right before Alvarez struck, third baseman Brandon Drury was lifted for migraines and second baseman Tyler Wade was removed because of flu-like symptoms.

Alvarez connected off Jonathan Holder (0-1) after midnight, deciding a game that took 5 hours, 20 minutes and included 14 pitchers and a couple of wild misadventures on the basepaths.

Rookie Pedro Araujo (1-1) got the win.

BRAVES 8, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - It was 27 degrees at gametime, and Brandon McCarthy used his arm and bat to help Atlanta win at Coors Field in Colorado's home opener.

The coldest recorded start in major league history was 23 games at Coors when these same teams met on April 23, 2013.

Brandon McCarthy (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in six solid innings and delivered a two-run double that chased German Marquez (0-1).

INDIANS 3, ROYALS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley singled home two runs in his first at-bat this season and Carlos Carrasco worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth for Cleveland in its chilly home opener.

Brantley missed the Indians' first six games while on the disabled list recovering from offseason ankle surgery. But just hours after being activated, the two-time All-Star delivered in the first inning against Kansas City lefty Danny Duffy (0-2).

Carrasco (2-0) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, and Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his second save to end a game that began with a 41-degree temperature.

PIRATES 14, REDS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Rookie Colin Moran had four hits and three RBIs, Starling Marte hit a bases-loaded triple and Pittsburgh won again.

The Pirates are off to a 6-1 start following an offseason in which they traded five-time All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen and ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.

Trevor Williams (2-0) scattered two runs over 5 1/3 innings despite allowing 10 hits. He pitched six hitless innings to win at Detroit last Sunday in his first start of the season.

Luis Castillo (0-2) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings and has a 9.00 ERA through two starts for Cincinnati. His 3.12 ERA in 15 starts last season led NL rookies.

BREWERS 5, CUBS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Orlando Arcia hit a game-ending single with one out in the ninth inning, lifting Milwaukee over Chicago.

Eric Thames and Travis Shaw ha two-run homers for the Brewers.

With the score 4-all in the ninth, Manny Pina drew a one-out walk of Mike Montgomery (0-1). Pinch hitter Hernan Perez hit a slow roller and dove into first as the throw from third baseman Kris Bryant skipped past Victor Caratini for an error that allowed Pina to advance to third. Arcia followed with an opposite-field flare to right.

Matt Albers (1-0) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for his first win for the Brewers.

PADRES 4, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Pirela had three hits, including a tiebreaking, two-run double as San Diego stopped Houston's five-game winning streak.

The game was tied 1-all in the fifth when Austin Hedges doubled off Lance McCullers Jr. (1-1), Manuel Margot singled and Pirela doubled.

The Astros had just four hits - all singles - after piling up 18 runs and 28 hits in a three-game sweep of Baltimore. San Diego's pitchers retired 16 straight batters before Marwin Gonzalez walked with one out in the ninth.

Luis Perdomo (1-1) bounced back from a tough outing in his first start to yield one run and four hits in five innings. Brad Hand closed for his second save.
