Boras wants Cardinals to be 'very cautious' with Rosenthal

Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal pitched a lot over the weekend and agent Scott Boras wants to make sure his client isn't overused.

Rosenthal threw 56 pitches between Saturday and Sunday's outings

"The key to managing these players like Trevor is you've got to watch how many times you get them up (to warm up)," Boras told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "If you get them up and don't use them, you really have to record it -- otherwise you're going to have a guy who is up 12 times and pitches seven and then the fatigue sets in and you lose him at the back end of the season."

The Cardinals figure to be playing into the postseason again this season so keeping Rosenthal healthy and fresh is a huge priority for both the team and agent.

"For a postseason team like the Cardinals, you have to be very, very cautious with the number of times you use the guy," Boras said. "Keep him in an inning and make sure he's going to be available throughout the season and the playoffs."
