Blue Jays sign Edwin Encarnacion to one-year deal
Edwin Encarnacion and the Blue Jays have agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract that will keep the infielder in Toronto next season.
The team announced the deal on Thursday. It includes a $3.5 million club option for 2012.
Encarnacion was claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics last month but became a free agent when the club didn't offer him a contract. He had spent the past two seasons at third base with the Blue Jays, but is expected to play first base and DH next season.
The 27-year-old batted .244 with 21 homers and 51 RBIs in 2010. He has a career .258 average with 100 homers and 337 RBIs in 652 games.
