Beane: A's want to keep Gray, have resisted 'pretty aggressive suitors'

In Sonny Gray, the Oakland Athletics have something of a gold mine. He's young (26), cost-controlled (he won't be eligible for arbitration until 2017 and can't be a free agent until after the 2019 season), hasn't suffered any significant arm/shoulder issues yet in his career and is among the league's top pitchers (14-7 with a 2.73 ERA for the last-place A's in 2015 and 33-20 with a 2.88 ERA from 2013-2015).

At the same time, the A's also hold in their possession one of the most potentially valuable trade chips in the entire league.

Team VP of baseball operations Billy Beane obviously knows this -- he's set the standard for trading talented players for young prospects, after all -- but he said recently on MLB Network Radio that the A's intend to retain Gray's services.

In fact, according to Beane the team has dealt with an abundance of trade offers:

Given the astronomical market for pitching these days, whether on the trade circuit or via free agency, it makes sense for teams to be calling the A's about Gray. It's feasible, too, that should a team come along with an absolutely can't-miss trade package with MLB-ready young players it might be hard for Beane and GM David Forst to turn it down. But at this point, it's anyone's guess what will happen.
