Astros make it official, promote Mark Appel to Triple-A Fresno

The future is now for Houston Astros pitching prospect Mark Appel.

Just a day after he said he was willing to help the Astros in any way possible, he took a step closer toward making that a reality: the club promoted him to Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday.

The news was announced by Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle on Twitter:

Appel seems destined to be called up by the Astros at some point later this summer, barring some unexpected road blocks at Triple-A. After a slow start with Class AA Corpus Christi, Appel has put it together over his past few outings, and impressed the Astros enough to warrant a promotion.

With young pitchers Lance McCullers and Vincent Velasquez already pitching well in Houston's rotation, the injection of Appel could eventually give the club quite a formidable staff.

In related news, Drellich noted that the Astros also promoted outfield prospect Brett Phillips from Single-A Lancaster to Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday.
