Albert Pujols passes Mark McGwire on all-time home run list
With a deep line drive that sailed over Toronto's left field wall on Wednesday night, a former Cardinals fixture passed another one on the all-time home runs list.
Albert Pujols' dinger off Marco Estrada was his 24th of the season, 139th as an Angel and 584th of his career, surpassing Mark McGwire who finished with 583. Pujols hit his first 445 as a perennial All-Star in St. Louis from 2001 to 2011.
Pujols needs just two more to tie Frank Robinson at 9th overall. And with still five years left on his contract, the 36-year-old stands a decent chance to move past Sammy Sosa (609), Jim Thome (612), Ken Griffey Jr. (630) and into the top five that begins with Willie Mays (660). As always, health permitting.
