The Old White Host Prestige Golfers
In only its second year, The Greenbrier Classic is shaping up to become one of those special stops on tour. After its inaugural event, the tournament received rave reviews and it shows with early commitments to this year's event by Phil Mickelson, Camilo Villegas, Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry, defending champion, Stuart Appleby, the 2010 PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year, and the Greenbrier's Golf Professional Emeritus, Tom Watson. What made last year so special was the strange set of events that led to Appleby's win. In the locker room at The Greenbrier is the framed scorecard of Sam Snead's 59 that he shot at the course in a pro-am in 1959. So it seemed somewhat surreal that Appleby would go out on Sunday and post a 59 of his own, the fifth in PGA Tour history. That score gave the Aussie a one-stroke victory over Jeff Overton, his first win in four years, and his 9th overall. It might be asking a lot for history to repeat itself, but stranger things have happened in the golf world. Tune in as the regular season on the PGA Tour starts to wind down and the players fight for the all-important points in the FedEx Cup standings.
