Sutherland shoots Champions Tour's first round of 59

Kevin Sutherland recorded the first sub-60 score on the Champions Tour, carding a 13-under 59 Saturday at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

The 50-year-old Sutherland made 12 birdies and an eagle in his second round at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, N.Y.

"I was making everything," Sutherland said.

He began his round with seven birdies and an eagle in his first eight holes. He missed both the fairway and green at the closing par-4 18th, and was unable to save par, missing a 6-footer for the chance to shoot 58.

"I started thinking (about 59) earlier then you should be, but it turned out all right," Sutherland said.

Sutherland shot 1-under 71 in the first round Friday, and now holds the clubhouse lead at 14 under.

While there have been no sub-60 scores on the Champions Tour before Sutherland, six players have carded 59 on the PGA Tour, five have shot the number on the Web.com Tour and Annika Sorenstam shot the LPGA's only 59 in 2001.
