Putting horror show ends Lawrie's Open hopes

Paul Lawrie putted his way out of contention for a second British Open title after a horrendous display on the greens in the third round on Saturday.

The 1999 champion made a total of 37 putts - including four at the last for a triple-bogey 7 - as he shot a 6-over 76 to drop off the leaderboard.

''I think that's the worst I've ever putted in a tournament,'' Lawrie said. ''It's just unbelievable how many I kept hitting five or six feet by from 25 feet.''

Lawrie said his putting horror show even made him lose count of his score.

''It was just frightening out there. I don't even know what I shot. What did I shoot? Really, it's just incredible.''

The Scot was 2 over for the tournament.
