Jordan Spieth Poised for a Bounce Back Season
After a disappointing 2015-16 PGA Tour season, Jordan Spieth is poised for a bounce-back year.
It was a rather disappointing 2015-16 PGA Tour season if you were Jordan Spieth. He had a slow season by his standards only winning two tournaments and neither were majors. Coming off the career season he had in the 2014-15 PGA Tour season, last season could be seen as quite the let down.
The 23-year-old star was on top of the golf world as he captured the Masters and the U.S. Open in 2014-15. On top of that, Spieth won three other tournaments including the Tour Championship which ended up giving him the FedEx Cup title. However, last season he was only able to win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and the Dean & DeLuca Invitational, falling short of a major championship win.
His closest chance for a major last year came in an attempt to defend his title in the year’s first major, the Masters. Headed into the final nine holes of the tournament, Spieth had a five stroke lead that was soon squandered.
In an epic and now well documented collapse, Spieth fell apart with a bogey on the 10th and 11th holes before dropping a quadruple bogey on the middle hole of Amen Corner. That paved the way for Danny Willett to take advantage, grab the lead and ultimately win. The collapse may or not have been what changed his season but the rest of the year wasn’t particularly good for him either.
After competing in the Ryder Cup in early October, Spieth took a break from golf opting not to play in any event for almost two months. He made his first appearance at the Emirates Australian Open on November 17th and it appears the break got him back into good form. Spieth won the event on the first hole of a thrilling playoff. It was the second time he won the tournament as he won the same event before his historic run in the 2014-15 season.
He was again seen a few weeks later at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in which he again fared pretty well. Although he didn’t win, he was able to finish in sixth place in a field packed with world’s best golfers.
With two solid finishes under his belt since his disappointing season, Spieth is poised to bounce back when the 2016-17 season resumes.
After a few weeks’ break, it will start back up in January at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and Spieth will be in the field. He won the event last year and continuing this year’s success with another win might just mean that Jordan Spieth is back.
