Pat Perez was four shots behind playing partner Lucas Glover, then birdied five of the last six holes Friday in the Wells Fargo Championship for a 7-under 65 and a two-shot lead.
Perez has made 18 birdies and was at 12-under 132, with a two-shot lead over Bill Haas (70) and Jonathan Byrd (68), with Glover (68) and Phil Mickelson (66) another shot behind.
Mickelson saved par from the water for the third time in two days, and poured in six birdies for a 6-under 66. It matched his best score in 30 rounds at Quail Hollow.
Vijay Singh, needing to crack the top 50 in the world to avoid U.S. Open qualifying, shot 68 and was four shots behind.
Late morning storms forced a delay of nearly 90 minutes.
At Birmingham, Alabama, Mark Calcavecchia opened a three-stroke lead in the Regions Tradition, shooting a 7-under 65 to run his bogey-free streak to 35 holes at Shoal Creek.
Calcavecchia birdied Nos. 10-12 to pull ahead and added another birdie on the par-5 17th to reach 11 under. He had a chance to get to 12 under, but missed a birdie putt by a few inches on No. 18
The 13-time PGA Tour winner, seeking his first Champions Tour victory in the 50-and-over circuit's first major of the year, hasn't made a bogey since opening the tournament with a double on the first hole.
Kenny Perry was second, matching Calcavecchia with a 65.
Jay Haas - whose son, Bill, was tied for second in the PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship - and Michael Allen were tied for third at 7 under. Haas had a 68, and Allen shot a 67.
First-round leader Tom Lehman (71) and Tom Pernice Jr. (66) were 6 under.
At Terrassa, Spain, Thomas Aiken shot a 4-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead in the Spanish Open, overshadowed by news about Spanish great Seve Ballesteros' worsening health.
Aiken, from South Africa, had an 8-under 136 total.
Spain's Pablo Larrazabal (70) was second, and countryman Alvaro Velasco (70), Frenchman Romain Wattel (71), England's Anthony Wall (70) and Scotland's Scott Jamieson (71) were 6 under.
The majority of players were on the El Prat course when news emerged that five-time major champion Ballesteros' condition has severely deteriorated, more than two years after the 54-year-old had surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumor. Ryder Cup partners Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez were moved to tears as they left the course and both declined to talk to reporters.
