Dustin Johnson and Jason Day Stick With TaylorMade

Jason Day and Dustin Johnson, the top two players in the world ranking, have agreed to extend their contracts with TaylorMade.

Heading into the offseason, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson were supposed to be the two most in-demand equipment free agents in golf. With a combined six PGA Tour wins in 2016, including the U.S. Open and the Players Championship, the two Player of the Year frontrunners have generated a lot of publicity for TaylorMade over the course of their careers, and any equipment brand would be glad to have either player on its roster.

As of Wednesday, however, Day and Johnson have ruled themselves out of the open market before they could even get there. TaylorMade announced earlier this week that both players have signed multi-year extensions.

TaylorMade stated that the extensions were “a move that reaffirms the company’s commitment to fielding the strongest Tour staff in the industry and putting the highest performing equipment in the world in their hands as they compete on the sport’s biggest stages.”

Day, the top-ranked player in the world, has been with TaylorMade since 2006. “I chose TaylorMade at the onset of my PGA TOUR career because they made products that performed,” Day said, according to PGATour.com. “They’ve supported me on my quest for World No. 1 since day one. I’m excited to continue working with the great team at TaylorMade and playing the best performing equipment in the game.”

He tweeted this photo for good measure:

For Johnson, who signed with TaylorMade in 2007, the decision to stay was performance-based. “When I started my professional career, my goal was to be the best and win tournaments,” he said. “I chose TaylorMade because they made products that outperformed anything else I had ever played. Since day one, I’ve had a great relationship with the TaylorMade team and especially the guys who support me every week out on TOUR. I’m looking forward to continuing our teamwork and playing equipment that I believe in and has helped me to succeed.”

While these extensions do not come as a surprise, they’ve effectively rained on the parade of golf fans who like to keep up with offseason equipment moves. However, we’re still waiting for the other shoe to drop on the Nike Golf situation, so we should be in for plenty of related drama in the coming months.

Johnson and Day are in the field at this week’s Tour Championship, where both men can clinch the FedEx Cup with a victory. With 72 holes still in front of us, there’s no way to tell how the event will play out, but another win for TaylorMade doesn’t seem far off — especially with the top two players on the planet on their side.
