Zack Darlington concussed
Quarterback Zack Darlington, a Nebraska commitment from Apopka (Fla.), was seriously injured in Apopka's season opener against Byrnes (S.C), a nationally televised game on ESPN.
The injury happened late in the fourth quarter as Darlington was flushed out of the pocket and took a hit to his upper chest and head area as he got to the sideline. Darlington went to the ground and landed face first. He was knocked unconscious and was taken off the field on a stretcher. He was strapped down to a buck board and a ventilator was used to help him breathe. Darlington was taken to an adjoining field where further aid was given until a helicopter arrived to take him to an area hospital.
By the time the helicopter arrived, ESPN confirmed that Darlington had regained consciousness and was moving on his own. Viewers could see members of the Apopka staff waving to Darlington on the helicopter as it was leaving the ground.
Apopka’s head coach is his father, Rick Darlington.
Darlington, 6 feet 1, 205 pounds, committed to the Cornhuskers in mid-June. He’s a three-star recruit and the No. 29-ranked quarterback in the nation.
