Yellow Jackets sting No. 14 Hokies as they go on to defeat Tech, 30-20 in Blacksburg.

The heavily favored No. 14 Hokies were set out to claim their supremacy in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a win over Georgia Tech but the Yellow Jackets wanted nothing to do with the talks of how they couldn’t play without their star players.

Virginia Tech won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball first and try to take some time away from the quick up-tempo run game of the Yellow Jackets.

On the opening kickoff the Hokies would fumble that gave the Jackets the ball in great field position. However, like most of the season, the Hokies defense managed to make a big stop when needed.

Georgia Tech came away with the first points of the game with a 40-yard field goal by Harrison Butker to give the Jackets a 3-0 lead. The Jackets would convert another field goal to take a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets kept stinging the Hokies in the second quarter when backup quarterback Matthew Jordan to a designed draw 56-yards for a touchdown that put the Jackets up, 13-0.

Georgia Tech made the announcement pregame that Jordan would be the starter over Justin Thomas.

“I didn’t know until pregame warm ups that I would be starting,” Jordan said. “I think I was a little nervous at first, but settled in once we got started, I believe.”

Before the half ended Jordan would find the end zone once again for his second rushing touchdown of the night putting the Jackets up 20-0.

The last time the Hokies trailed by 20 or more points going into the half was in 2014 when they trailed Miami 24-0, the Canes went on to win that game, 30-6.

The outcome of the game didn’t see the No. 14 Hokies get the win, but fans in attendance did get to witness history.

Virginia Tech wide receiver Isaiah Ford moved into first place on the school’s career receptions list with a 5-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Ford needed four catches coming into the game to eclipse Jarrett Boykin (184 catches from 2008-2011). Ford finished with eight catches for 85 yards and a touchdown, giving him 189 catches for his career.

The Hokies will now prepare for Notre Dame in a game that at this point should become a win for the Hokies. It’s the game in two weeks when the Hokies take on Virginia that all Hokies fans will keep an eye on. If Tech defeats Virginia they are in the ACC Championship game.

The most important thing now for the Hokies is to live by Fuente’s speeches. Go 1-0 each week. That’s never been more true than now.
