West Virginia Football: Mountaineers Still Have A Playoff Shot

West Virginia football suffered a bad loss against a conference opponent, but does that mean that their shot of making a run for the College Football Playoff is gone?

Even though West Virginia is no longer one of the undefeated FBS team, they still can’t be ruled out of College Football Playoff. The Mountaineers are a very tough team still, with a stout defense, and a high flying offense.

With this combination of skill and power on defense, speed on offense, and a coaching staff that is on the brink of being let go, this is a very dangerous team to face. Even though they had a bad loss to Oklahoma State, I have nothing but faith in the Mountaineers.

They are on the meat of their schedule, and it’s sure not going to be an easy road for the rest of the season, this team is still going to be the team to beat in the Big 12. They only have suffered one loss in conference play, and it was against a notable opponent in Oklahoma State.

The Mountaineers still have Kansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor at home to go in the last five games of the season, and Texas and Iowa State on the road. These five games are really going to test the strength of the entire Mountaineers team.

Even with some factors in their hands, the Mountaineers may struggle in their next five games. Oklahoma has their sights set on another Big 12 title, and WVU would need that head-to-head win to break that possible tie.

Right now, it looks as though WVU will need to win out for a shot at the playoffs, and even then they’ll need some help. Given the fact that the Big 12 has no conference title game, the College Football Playoff Committee will be hard to sell on giving a playoff spot to a one-loss Big 12 team.

If West Virginia can escape the season with the single conference loss, they’ll need a probably upset in one of the other Power-5 conference championship games, and a lot of love from the committee.

The Mountaineers tasted a loss, and need to put that behind them. After what should be a big win over Kansas, the road to the playoffs will start getting tougher.
