College football Week 4: Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Arkansas come out with wins

Week 4 of the college football season brought with it more than a few intriguing matchups. 

It was a day filled with close calls, upsets and standout performances as No. 4 Oklahoma won a tough battle in Norman against West Virginia, and No. 16 Arkansas handed No. 7 Texas A&M its first loss of the season, defeating the Aggies 20-10.

In the early window, No. 12 Notre Dame and QB Jack Coan smashed his old team, No. 18 Wisconsin, 41-13. With the win, Brian Kelly is now the winningest coach in ND school history (106).

And in the afternoon, sparks flew in Starkville as LSU narrowly escaped Mississippi State 28-25, and an in-state rivalry was renewed when Texas demolished host Texas Tech 70-35. And in a later stunner, Oregon State took down USC with ease.

OREGON STATE 45, USC 27

Beavers' ball

Oregon State took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a quick, six-play touchdown drive.

Trojans fire back

USC responded on the next drive when QB Kedon Slovis connected with Gary Bryant for this score.

Redemption tour

In the final few minutes of the second quarter, Nolan hit his receivers for back-to-back TDs to once again take charge in the Coliseum. Heading into the break, Oregon State led 21-17.

Racking up points

It was more of the same for the Beavers in the second half, as Oregon State continued to light up the scoreboard on the way to an easy victory.

Road warriors

Returning the favor

… But the Sooners wasted no time striking back as Heisman Trophy hopeful Spencer Rattler found tight end Austin Stogner to knot things up at 7.

Midway through the second quarter, Rattler's pass was intercepted by CB Jackie Matthews.

FG frenzy

After trading field goals throughout the second half, both teams were tied at 13. Keeping with the theme, OU won it all on last-second FG as the clock expired.

Off to the races

The Razorbacks started off strong as QB KJ Jefferson connected with receiver Treylon Burks on this 85-yard bomb, good for Arkansas' first touchdown on the day.

Tomfoolery

Arkansas didn't stop there. They closed out the first frame on this must-see trick play.

Back on the board

At the top of the second quarter, Jefferson hit AJ Green for a 48-yard gain and the Razorbacks' second TD of the first half.

One-score game

To start the second half, the Aggies snagged their first touchdown of the game. Isaiah Spiller looked like he was shot out of a cannon on this 67-yard run.

In the end, the Razorbacks didn't take their foot off the gas and pulled off the upset, 20-10, and moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2003.

No. 5 IOWA 24, COLORADO STATE 14

Catching air

It got loud at Kinnick Stadium when Iowa struck first on this incredible diving catch from Keagan Johnson.

Here come the Rams

With 3:55 left before the half, Colorado State knotted things up at 7 on this short run from Todd Centeio.

The Rams took the lead 24 seconds before the break.

Tie game

To start off the second half, Tyrone Tracy punched it in for the Hawkeyes to make it 14-14.

Iowa seals the deal

Then, QB Spencer Petras found a wide-open Sam LaPorta in the red zone to take the lead in the third, and the Hawkeyes had a hold of the game from that point on.

BAYLOR 31, No. 14 IOWA STATE 29

Back-and-forth

After trading off scores in the first frame, things were tied at 7 heading into the second quarter.

Pulling ahead 

Baylor pulled away from Iowa State with two huge touchdowns in the second, while the Cyclones settled for two field goals. At the half, Iowa State trailed the Bears 21-13.

Bouncing back

Iowa State started the second half with a huge defensive play that set up a FG to close the gap, 21-16 …

… but Baylor wasn't letting up. Midway through the third, Trestan Ebner returned this punt 98 yards for a touchdown.

Upset complete

With 24 seconds left in the game, Iowa State scored to make it a two-point game, 31-29,  but the Cyclones weren't able to pull off the two-point conversion, and things ended there.

No. 12 NOTRE DAME 41, No. 18 WISCONSIN 13

Toe tappin'

It was a low-scoring first quarter on both sides, but not for lack of effort.

It might not have led to points for the Badgers, but this dime from Graham Mertz was still a thing of beauty.

Taking off 

On the other side, QB Coan connected with Kevin Austin on this rainbow to put Notre Dame in the lead.

The Badgers charged back with a tying touchdown in the third, courtesy of Mertz and Kendric Pryor.

Making a statement

Coan exited the field midway through the third quarter with an apparent leg injury, and Notre Dame turned to third-string quarterback Drew Pyne (backup Tyler Buchner was out with hamstring issues).

Heading into the final frame, the Fighting Irish trailed by three, but on Notre Dame's first possession of the fourth, Chris Tyree returned the kickoff 96 yards to the house.

When Wisconsin got the ball back, Mertz fumbled after a huge sack by Jayson Ademilola, and Notre Dame recovered, which set up this touchdown pass from Pyne to Austin – his second of the day.

Closing time

Notre Dame's defense didn't miss a beat in the final minutes. Things ended on back-to-back pick-sixes. Mertz finished the day 18-of-41 for 240 yards and four interceptions.

LSU 28, MISSISSIPPI STATE 25

It's tradition

Kayshon Boutte continued the tradition of sure-handed Tigers receivers on the game's first touchdown.

Wide open

Trey Palmer left the Bulldogs' defense in the dust on this one to put LSU up 21-3 in the third.

Closing the gap

But Mississippi State wasn't going down without a fight as the Bulldogs kicked into high gear with three second-half touchdown passes from Will Rogers to keep the Tigers within arms reach.

In the end, it wasn't enough to pull off a comeback, and things ended there with LSU narrowly escaping.

The Longhorns struck first when Bijan Robinson found paydirt on this fourth-down romp early in the first.

When it rains, it pours

In the second, Josh Thompson picked off Tyler Shough and took it to the house to take a decisive 28-7 lead.

Replay it 

Texas didn't let up as Xavier Worthy increased the lead to 35-7 in the second on this replay-worthy catch, and the rest was history.

THE BEST OF THE REST:

GEORGIA TECH 45, No. 21 NORTH CAROLINA 22

Although UNC was the first on the board, things quickly got out of hand for the Tar Heels, who were trailing Georgia Tech by as many as 21 points at the end of the third quarter.

This was Tech's first win against a ranked team since 2017.

No. 20 MICHIGAN STATE 23, NEBRASKA 20, OT

Michigan State narrowly escaped unranked Nebraska. This tricky punt return sent it into overtime, where the Spartans finished what they started, defeating the Cornhuskers by three.

OKLAHOMA STATE 31, No. 25 KANSAS STATE 20

Oklahoma State upset Kansas State by double digits after putting up 31 points in the first half.

NC STATE 27, No. 9 CLEMSON 21, 2OT 

NC State defeated Clemson in double overtime in an absolutely thrilling fashion – snapping the Tigers' 36-game win streak over unranked teams

It was the Wolfpack’s first win against a Top 10 team since 2012 and their first win over Clemson since '11.

BOSTON COLLEGE 41, MISSOURI 34, OT 

Mizzou kicker Harrison Mevis drilled a 56-yarder to tie the game as the clock expired, and sent the game to overtime.

In the end, it all came down to this interception in the end zone from Brandon Sebastian.

The Eagles remain undefeated and reached 4-0 for the first time since 2007.

BOWLING GREEN 14, MINNESOTA 10

Bowling Green picked up its first FBS win since 2019 after shocking heavily-favored Minnesota at home.

The loss snapped Minnesota's streak of 21 straight non-conference wins – the longest streak in the country entering Saturday – and marked the Golden Gophers' first loss to a non-Power 5 conference opponent since 2011.

GEORGIA 62, VANDERBILT 0

Georgia got off to one of the best starts we've seen all year, using defensive magic and its high-powered offense to take a 35-0 lead in the first quarter and hold Vanderbilt to six passing yards in the first half.

Midway through the final frame, Georgia had 62 points on the board, while the Commodores had just 62 total yards on the field. And just like that, the Bulldogs got their largest SEC road win in program history.

SMU 42, TCU 34

TCU's Zach Evans was uncatchable on this dazzling 46-yard run to the house.

On the other side, wideout Reggie Roberson gave SMU a scoring boost after a huge defensive breakdown from the Horned Frogs allowed him to find the end zone with ease.

Talk about taking it to the house. Penn State was off and running against Villanova early in the second quarter.
