Watch Will Muschamp speak about USC's 2016 recruiting class

Will Muschamp and his staff wanted to build depth within his first recruiting class. By all accounts, he did a nice job of doing just that. The Gamecocks signed 26 athletes on Wednesday -- after a late flurry saw USC land four prospects on signing day.

When looking at the class South Carolina signed in 2016, three position groups were not only targeted, but addressed: Quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive line.

Landing Brandon McIlwain was immense. Not only was the Pennsylvania signal-caller the crown jewel in USC's class, but he provides Muschamp with a true building block at the position. It's a spot where South Carolina has seen some instability of late. McIlwain enrolling early into school will also help his transition to the college level.

At defensive line, the Gamecocks signed seven prospects. It's a good mix of stout nose guards, quicker and undersized defensive tackles, athletes with good rushing skills off the edge, and taller, long defensive ends. It'll in theory give Muschamp lots of versatility to work with.

At receiver, the three headliners include Bryan Edwards, Randrecous Davis, and Korey Banks. These three will instantly upgrade the talent within the receiver corps, and it wouldn't be a shock to see all three play immediately.

All in all, this was a very good first class for Muschamp and his staff. With a full cycle to recruit and build relationships, expect the 2017 class to be even better.
