VMI 21, Charleston Southern 17
Virginia Military Institute won their first game of the season with a 21-7 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday.
The Keydets (1-5, 1-1 Big South Conference) were led by Chaz Jones, who recorded 96 yards and 2 touchdowns on 28 carries. Jones had a 1-yard run early in the first quarter. After Austin Wald returned a blocked punt 22 yards to get within 14-11 in the fourth quarter, Jones scored again from 7 yards out to extend the Keydets lead to 10 points with 3:15 left.
Charleston Southern (0-6, 0-1) scored 13 plays later on the ensuing possession, but VMI handed the ball to Jones on the game's final three plays to run the clock out.
Malcolm Dixon threw for 205 yards and a touchdown for Charleston Southern.
The win marks VMI's second straight win over Charleston Southern and now lead the all-time series 6-5.
