Vandy QB decision made but won't be announced
Vanderbilt has a starting quarterback. Second-year coach Derek Mason reportedly said Tuesday at his first press conference of the season that a decision was made last week as to whether Wade Freebeck or Johnny McCrary will start Thursday night in the Commodores' season opener.
Which one will it be? Well ...
“Quarterback will not be addressed," Mason said, according to The Tennessean. "You will see it Thursday night at 7:01. I’ve got a starter, and I’ve got a backup. My idea is to take the pressure off these guys."
Mason hinted in comments last week that a decision was close, and he seemed to imply that Freebeck was in the lead. However, he's been vague enough in his analysis to keep everyone guessing, and he made it clear Tuesday that he's been ambiguous for a reason.
"It’s not about who the fans want to see or what they want to know. It’s about what puts these guys in the best possible situation to play well."
Freebeck and McCrary, both sophomores, were among four quarterbacks to see time for Vandy last season.
