USC builds for the future with signings of McIlwain and Freeman

Will Muschamp took a big step towards the rebuilding process in Columbia -- announcing the additions of prep quarterback Brandon McIlwain and running back C.J. Freeman. Both signed financial aid agreements -- and are slated to enroll at the university officially in January.

McIlwain has long been the crown jewel of South Carolina's 2016 class. With the tantalizing option of bypassing college to sign a professional baseball contract, McElwain opted instead to attend college.

His signing is significant on a number of levels, considering his talent level -- and the position in which McIlwain plays.

Freeman prepped at Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Rivals.com 3-star back looked at Wisconsin, Louisville, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech before sticking with the Gamecocks.

He rushed for 2,091 yards and 23 touchdowns during his senior year of high school -- averaging more than 7.0 yards per carry. A solidly-built back, Freeman is adept at running downhill and churning his legs forward for extra yardage.

With Brandon Wilds graduating, there's ample opportunity for Freeman to come in right away and impact the depth chart at the running back position. His ability to accelerate quickly towards the hole could aid in Freeman's transition on the collegiate level.
