UNC Football: Mitch Trubisky's stock soaring

UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky is starting to garner more attention from the national audience

If you’ve watched the North Carolina Tar Heels this season, you’re familiar with how well quarterback Mitch Trubisky has played.

Now, the rest of the nation is starting to see it as well.

Trubisky’s stock is soaring through the roof right now after his hot start to the season. The Tar Heels are 5-2 and trying to return to the ACC Championship Game.

While the Tar Heels need to win out and get some help, they will rely on the play of Trubisky and the offense.

On Wednesday, Trubisky started to get some more attention from a national writer as Mel Kiper Jr. showed respect in his latest 2017 NFL Draft player rankings.

Kiper Jr. listed Trubisky as the No. 1 quarterback prospect for the 2017 NFL Draft. He has him listed as the 14th overall player in the draft.

Here’s what Kiper says on Trubisky:

Welcome to the Big Board, Mitch Trubisky. He’s my new No. 1 quarterback. I’ve been looking for a QB to make the leap this season, and I found it in Trubisky, who has been the best signal-caller in the country — yes, that includes Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, who has missed too many throws overall.

Trubisky is only a junior and it’s not guaranteed he even declares for the 2017 NFL Draft. But his stick is at an all-time high right now and for good reason.

The quarterback has completed 71 percent of his passes and has thrown for 18 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.

Both of those interceptions came in the Hurricane game against Virginia Tech. Even with that game, Trubisky still has impressive numbers.

And he’s starting to make throws like this:

Kiper Jr. is not the only one who is giving Trubisky respect. CBS Sports mocks him to go fourth overall to the Chicago Bears if he does indeed declare for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Beat writer Greg Gabriel also mentioned Trubisky’s name as someone to keep watching as the College Football season continues.  Here’s what he writes:

Trubisky generally shows good ability to read the field, has a minor progression to go through and makes good decisions. He seldom forces the ball. He also has the athleticism, quick feet and speed to avoid pass rushers and make and extend plays with his feet. It is very obvious on tape that he is in command on the field and has leadership skills.

Personally, we’d love to see Mitch stay for another year at UNC but if he continues to play well and that stock continues to rise, he could see himself being called in the first round.

Trubisky and the Tar Heels have four total games left, three ACC games, as they look to make a push at the Coastal Division title. They will take on Georgia Tech Nov. 5 just a week after they are on a bye.
