UConn survives Maine on late FG

(STATS) - Maine threatened to post the first FCS win over an FBS school this season, but Connecticut survived the Black Bears 24-21 on Bobby Puyol's 37-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining Thursday night in East Hartford.

The winning drive came after UConn defensive tackle Mike Myers blocked a 47-yard field-goal attempt with 1:48 to play. The Huskies (1-0) then drove 50 yards in nine plays.

Maine's Joe Harasymiak, at 30 the youngest head coach in Division I, lost in his debut.

Black Bears quarterback Dan Collins threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Jaleel Reed had eight receptions for 169 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown.

Defensively, linebacker Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga posted a game-high 12 tackles and cornerback Najee Goode Jr. returned a fumble 74 yards for a touchdown, giving Maine a 21-14 fourth-quarter lead.
