Texas A&M Football: Season Rewind - Tyrel Dodson

Freshman linebacker for the Texas A&M football team, Tyrel Dodson figures to play a key role in the Aggie defense in the coming years.

Stats

Tyrel Dodson played in nine games this season. He accounted for 25 tackles, 1.5 of them for a loss. He recovered a fumble against Arkansas that led to a game sealing touchdown by the offense.

Recap

Dodson was a three star recruit out of Franklin, Tennessee last year. The A&M defense faced several off-field issues an injuries during the summer, depleting an already shallow linebacking corps. That thrust Dodson into consistent playing time from the third string of John Chavis’ defense.

He certainly played with a chip on his shoulder against his home state opponent, Tennessee. Dodson had one of his best games against the Vols at Kyle Field, recording four tackles against his home state team.

The Aggies have quietly begun to build SEC-caliber depth. Dodson was one of only a few true freshman to regularly see the field in 2016. Expect that to continue next season.

Looking Ahead

Seniors Shaan Washington and Claude George will be moving on, leaving room for new faces in the upper ranks. One of those spots might be filled by the nations number two overall inside linebacker recruit Anthony Hines who committed to Texas A&M last week.

Hines figures to immediately compete for playing time. The A&M linebacker is in need of more elite-level talent and depth to compete at a high level in the SEC.

Don’t count out Dodson just yet. The young freshman had a solid 2016 campaign and will be better in his second year in the Aggies’ defensive scheme.
