TCU loses top linebacker, possibly sack leader for remainder of year

TCU entered the season having to replace some heavy hitters on its defense, and now it appears they will scramble to fill holes left by injuries sustained in last Thursday's season-opener.

Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday that junior linebacker Sammy Douglas will miss the remainder of the season due to injury. Patterson also said defensive end James McFarland is "close" to being out the rest of the year.

Douglas entered the season as the only TCU linebacker with college playing experience. He started alongside freshman Mike Freeze. McFarland was the Frogs' top sack man in 2014.

TCU, which was already replacing its top three linebackers from last season, now has no upperclassmen to lean on at the position.

The Frogs play their home opener Saturday against Stephen F. Austin, then welcome SMU on Sept. 19 before traveling to Texas Tech to open the Big 12 schedule on Sept. 26.
