Source: LSU's Orgeron not joining staff at Mississippi State

There were reports Thursday that Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen had offered LSU defensive line coach Ed Orgeron the Bulldogs' vacant defensive coordinator job, but a source told FOX Sports on Friday morning that the Louisiana native was not offered the job. Things never got that far and Orgeron really wants to remain an LSU Tiger, according to the source.

Orgeron -- who came to LSU after a stint where he led USC to a 6-2 record with a win over a Top 5 Stanford team as the Trojans' interim head coach -- sparked the Tigers' young D-line to a productive season in 2015. LSU had 34 sacks, including six in the Texas Bowl win over Texas Tech. The year before Orgeron arrived in Baton Rouge, LSU had just 19 sacks.

Orgeron, a Pete Carroll and Jimmy Johnson disciple, served as the Ole Miss defensive coordinator when he first took over as the Rebels' head coach. In 2005, his team ranked No. 27 in the nation in total defense and then ranked No. 76 in 2006. He hired a defensive coordinator, John Thompson, for the 2007 season.

Mullen is looking to hire his third defensive coordinator in three years. Manny Diaz, who ran the Bulldogs' defense in 2015, left to become the Miami DC. Diaz had replaced Geoff Collins, who exited Starkville after the 2013 season to head the defense at Florida.
