Sams leads McNeese State to 43-6 win over Incarnate Word
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) Daniel Sams threw for 181 yards and one touchdown as McNeese State opened the season and Southland Conference play with a 43-6 win over Incarnate Word on Saturday night.
McNeese State (1-0, 1-0 Southland) was slated to open the season against LSU last weekend but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Cowboys held a slim 9-0 lead at the half but scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to take control. The McNeese State defense shut down the Cardinals run game, limiting them to 12 yards for the game. Trent Brittain and Jordan Scelfo threw for 215 yards to give Incarnate Word (1-1, 0-1) 227 total yards. McNeese State rolled up 406 total yards.
Derrick Milton rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown and Tavarious Battiste hauled in three passes for 64 yards for the Cowboys.
