Russell's production, astuteness under pressure impress Briles

Each Baylor quarterback that has come up has faced greater challenges than the one before. Robert Griffin III launched the Bears onto the national scene. Bryce Petty won consecutive Big 12 titles.

Now Seth Russell is expected to guide the No. 4 Bears to the promised land of the College Football Playoff and contend for a national title.

That's a lot of pressure for a first-time starter. But that's exactly what impresses Baylor coach Art Briles. Russell doesn't get flustered. He understands the situation and processes it in his mind.

"Everything he told us on the sideline in the game was right on with what we saw on the tape, and that's a great sign," Briles said during his Monday press conference. "He's a really sharp guy who understands the game."

The only thing unexpected from Russell in the 56-21 romp over SMU was that he completed only half his passes. Even so, those 15 completions went for 376 yards and five touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown.

"I'll take the production," Briles said.

Russell will have a couple more weeks to adjust to being the Bears' starter against what should prove to be overmatched competition. Baylor makes its home debut at McLane Stadium on Saturday against Lamar and then wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule at home against Rice.
