Richt says he won't offer 'hint' on quarterback competition

Mark Richt has been around long enough to know how to coachspeak around certain questions from the media. And that's exactly what he did Saturday at his first press conference of Georgia's fall camp.

Richt was asked by a reporter to "evaluate" the Bulldogs' quarterback play thus far, and he apparently knew what the question was intended to to. So, according to Dawg Nation, he stayed far away from any sort of specific answer.

"You know I’m not gonna give anybody any kind of hint," Richt told reporters in attendance.

There's a three-way battle going on in camp between Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Greyson Lambert, and the only info Richt provided is that the three have been rotating first-team snaps. As of Sunday, which will feature Georgia's sixth preseason practice, all three of the contenders will have had two days of lining up with the starters.

Richt also expanded a bit on his evaluation process more generally, saying:

"It’s really a different evaluation when they’re with certain groups. If you’re with the ones, you probably have a little bit better protection. You have guys knowing exactly what to do. You might have a few more guys break open.

"If you’re with the threes, sometimes a guy might have a missed assignment, all of a sudden there’s somebody in your face, you’ve gotta react to that, and that’s football, and that’s part of the quarterback position is how do you handle getting sacked, or how do you handle pressure? Do you throw it up for grabs? Do you make poor decisions?

"So we're really evaluating them under different circumstances, which I think is good. Not trying to make any judgments on anybody yet. We’re just gathering information, and we still have a good bit of time before we have to figure anything out."

It appears that Richt will be using as much of that time as possible before committing to a decision on a starter.
