Reports: UCA's Campbell to become South Alabama coach
(STATS) - South Alabama is expected to hire Central Arkansas coach Steve Campbell as its new coach, according to various news reports.
The 52-year-old would become just the second coach in South Alabama history. Joey Jones resigned last month after going 52-49 in nine seasons.
Campbell led Central Arkansas to the Southland Conference title and a 10-2 record this season. The Bears' campaign ended with a second-round loss to New Hampshire in the FCS playoffs last Saturday.
Named the Southland's coach of the year, he has a 33-15 record in four seasons at Central Arkansas. He was a finalist for the 2016 STATS FCS Eddie Robinson Award following a 10-3 season.
Campbell also has been the head coach at Southwest Mississippi Junior College, Delta State and Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College. He won national titles at Delta (NCAA Division II, 2000) and Mississippi Gulf College (NJCAA, 2007).
