Report: Suspect arrested in shooting death
Police in Boulder, Colo., have arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of shooting and killing a New Hampshire football player who intervened during an attempted robbery Friday, the Boulder Daily Camera reported Saturday.
Kevin Michael McGregor was arrested late Friday on suspicion of first-degree murder, first-degree murder during a robbery and attempted aggravated robbery. He was apprended while working at a sandwich shop three blocks away from where the shooting took place.
University of New Hampshire football player Todd Walker, 20, and a female friend were walking to the woman's home at approximately 2 a.m. local time Friday when a man with a black bandanna covering his face confronted them and tried to steal the woman's purse.
The woman pulled the bandanna off of the would-be robber's face, after which the man fired a shot into the air and pointed the gun at the woman, police said.
According to Walker's father, the 20-year-old stepped in front of his friend and was shot in the chest "at point-blank range."
Tips from the community led police to the sandwich shop where McGregor worked. When officers served a search warrant at McGregor's home in Longmont, Colo., they found the handgun used in the shooting and a jacket described by a witness.
McGregor was booked into jail around 3 a.m. local time Saturday. He is being held without bail.
"We're pleased to have a dangerous person out of the community," Boulder Police Department Chief Mark Beckner said Saturday at a news conference. "It's very satisfying when people step forward and ... provide us with very valuable information."
McGregor was previously charged with robbery, burglary and assault in 2008.
