Report: Strong is targeting TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie

Change is coming to Charlie Strong's offensive staff and the Texas coach has targeted TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie.

According to a report by Orangebloods.com, Texas wants Cumbie to take over the offense, hoping for the type of dramatic rise he helped orchestrate at TCU alongside co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. The two installed a spread passing attack that immediately elevated Patterson's previously methodical offense to one of the most lethal in the nation.

Quarterback Trevone Boykin went from playing wide receiver and running back to becoming a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2014 and 2015. Cumbie, who played quarterback at Texas Tech under Mike Leach and later became a play-caller for the Red Raiders, would also fit the bill as quarterbacks coach for the Longhorns, who are desperate to develop a consistent signal-caller.

One hitch is that TCU might lose Meacham, who is one of two finalists for the head coaching job at North Texas. If he leaves, Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson and athletic director Chris Del Conte might be willing to pay to keep Cumbie on board, and not lose both coordinators, and one to a Big 12 rival.

TCU ranks No. 4 in the nation in total offense and No. 9 in passing. Both rankings took a hit of late with Boykin missing most of the game against Kansas and all of the Oklahoma game, plus star receiver Josh Doctson missing the last few games with a wrist injury.

It's certainly an interesting development as Strong heads into a crucial Year 3 needing to overhaul what has been a terribly inconsistent and mostly underachievin, offense, and one that has lacked any identity.
