Report: PSU turned down chance to extend Pitt series beyond 4 games

Penn State football fans dreaming of seeing Pittsburgh return to the schedule on a yearly basis reportedly are going to have to settle for four games at most in the near future.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Panthers director of athletics Scott Barnes told reporters over the weekend his recently announced renewal of the Pitt-West Virginia series came only after he was told by his Penn State counterpart the Nittany Lions were all booked up.

“Our priority was to try and lock in Penn State as much as we could, as often as we could,” Barnes said. “The second priority was West Virginia.”

The Panthers and Nittany Lions will renew their in-state rivalry next year and play four consecutive years.

Pitt and West Virginia are set to play from 2022-25.
