Report: Boykin out, freshman Sawyer to start against No. 7 Oklahoma

Heisman candidate Trevone Boykin will not start, and likely will not even play, today for No. 18 TCU in Saturday's critical game at No. 7 Oklahoma.

Redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer is expected to start, TCU coach Gary Patterson told ESPN's Holly Rowe early Saturday morning. Boykin sprained his ankle during last week's game against Kansas.

The Horned Frogs (9-1, 6-1 in the Big 12) will also be without Josh Doctson. He will miss at least the final two regular-season games with a wrist injury.

Dealing with injuries throughout the season, especially on the defensive side, TCU managed to get to 8-0 behind Boykin's brilliant season.

He's passed for 3,427 yards and 29 touchdowns while throwing just nine interceptions, four of which came two weeks ago in the playoff-crushing loss at Oklahoma State. Boykin has also rushed for 596 yards with eight touchdowns.

He exited the Kansas game in the first quarter and did not return. Without him, Sawyer managed to lead the Horned Frogs to just one touchdown, but it was good enough for a 23-17 victory. Earlier in the week, Patterson said Sawyer, the third-string quarterback, played better than senior Bram Kohlhausen in the game, gaining the edge to start against the Sooners.

TCU shared the 2014 Big 12 championship with Baylor. The league will declare a single champion this season, and TCU must beat Oklahoma to remain in the race.
