Report: Bears to name new athletic director

Michael Williams, who has acted as Cal's athletic director on an interim basis for almost a year, will be named the schools permanent athletic director, according to a report by Mike Vernon of the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to Vernon, Williams did not confirm or deny that he will be formally announced as the schools AD.

“If there’s news, it’s coming out of the chancellor’s office,” Williams said, according to Vernon. “If I’m lucky enough to be that person, that’s great. I love serving Cal. I love serving this campus. I think we’ve done a lot of great things in the last 10 months. I’d be happy to keep doing what we’re doing and stay on this trajectory.”

Williams replaced Sandy Barbour last June. Barbour had held the job for previous 10 years.

Before serving as Cal's interim athletic director, Williams was the vice chair of capital markets for Barclays Global Investors. Williams is a 1982 UC Berkeley graduate and was part of the wrestling team while attending the school.
