Pitt, West Virginia agree to resume Backyard Brawl

To the delight of Pitt and West Virginia football fans all over, both schools have announced that the Backyard Brawl will resume. The only downside is that Panthers and Mountaineers fans will have to wait until 2022 to see it again.

On Thursday, the two border-state rivals released a press release stating that the two schools have agreed to resume the Backyard Brawl, beginning on Sept. 17, 2022, in Pittsburgh.

“Pitt and West Virginia have a long and storied rivalry that dates back to the 19th century,” Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes, said in a statement. “I’ve learned there is a lot of passion surrounding this game and we’re pleased to be able to rekindle that history.

“An unfortunate byproduct of conference realignment has been the interruption of numerous traditional rivalries across the country. Everyone wins when two great series like Pitt-Penn State and Pitt-West Virginia are renewed, especially the student-athletes and fans of college football.”

The two teams have faced off against one another 104 times, with Pitt leading the series with a 61-40-3 all-time record versus West Virginia.
