Penn State Nittany Lions at Purdue Boilermakers Preview

Penn State will look to avoid a letdown this week at Purdue.

The Penn State Nittany Lions shocked the college football world last week by upsetting the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes. With the win, Penn State vaulted into the AP Top-25 Poll for the first time since the 2011 season. Up next is a road matchup with one of the worst teams in the Big Ten.

Game Info:

Although this game looks like a mismatch on paper — Penn State is a double-digit favorite — the Nittany Lions know first-hand that anything can happen. They need to look no further than last week when they entered as huge underdogs and overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter for an upset victory.

Saturday’s matchup in Purdue could be the perfect definition of a trap game.

The Nittany Lions have made great strides as the season has progressed, but the offense still needs some work. They had several stalled drives against the Buckeyes and struggled at times to move the ball.

However, the defense showed up in a big way. With the return of linebacker Jason Cabinda and Brandon Bell, the unit looks like it has turned a corner.

Purdue enters the matchup on a two-game losing streak, but nearly pulled off an upset against Nebraska last week. The Boilermakers have put up good numbers through the air this season, ranking 16th in the nation with an average of 306 yards a game. Quarterback David Blough has thrown for 2,065 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Defense has been the main problem for the Boilers, as they rank 102nd, allowing 33 points a game.

The two schools haven’t met since 2013, but the Nittany Lions currently holds a seven-game winning streak. Penn State last traveled to West Lafayette in 2012 and left with a 34-9 victory.
