Pac-12 Networks could be available on DirecTV soon
According to multiple outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, the chairman of the FCC has signed off on AT&T's takeover of DirecTV. This could be very good news for the Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 fans across the country.
Per Wall Street Journal: FCC set to approve AT&T takeover of DirecTV. Could result in @Pac12Networks on DTV this season
— Jon Wilner (@wilnerhotline) July 21, 2015
According to Jon Wilner of College Hotline, AT&T would be in charge of DirecTV and AT&T has a long standing business relationship with the Pac-12 conference. The Pac-12's partnership with AT&T includes sponsorships and equipment, not just distribution.
The Pac-12 football season kicks off on the Pac-12 Networks on Sept. 5. Will the Pac-12 Network be on DirecTV by that point?
Right now, it's anyone's guess. The deal between AT&T and DirecTV still needs to be officially approved, which could take days or weeks. Moreover, AT&T would still have to strike a deal with the Pac-12 conference.
According to sources close to Wilner, AT&T "could ask the conference for a lower in-market subscription price (approx. $0.80) than the Pac12Nets are currently charging U-verse, Comcast, Time Warner, etc."
So, would it be worth it to the Pac-12 to lower its subscription price across the board in order to add DirecTV customers? We'll know soon enough.
As Wilner says, "frustrated Pac-12 fans with DirecTV should take a cautiously optimistic approach as the '15 season approaches."
