Ole Miss Names Wesley McGriff as Defensive Coordinator

Ole Miss has named Auburn secondary coach Wesley McGriff as the defensive coordinator for the Rebels.

The Ole Miss Rebels have named a new defensive coordinator to replace Dave Wommack, who retired on the day of the Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss ranked as one of the worst defensive teams in the country, ranking 110th in the nation in total defense.

Wesley McGriff, former Ole Miss cornerbacks coach, has the Auburn Tigers ranked 20th in the nation in total defense.

The defensive backs for Auburn are some of the best in the nation, ranking 5th in defensive back havoc rate with a 9.0% rating.

The Tigers are one of the most aggressive defenses in the nation. PD to INC is a statistic that measures the amount of passes that the were incomplete for the opponent that you intercepted or broke up.

Auburn has a PD to INC rating of 41.7%, which ranks as best in the nation.

If Ole Miss fans want an aggressive “landshark” defense, then McGriff appears to be the answer here.

A lot of fans will voice their displeasure with this hire but McGriff is the correct hire under the circumstances in my opinion.

Recruiting for the Rebels should improve greatly, especially on the defensive side of the ball with the hiring of McGriff.

The defense for the Tigers are one of the more fundamentally sound defenses in the nation, especially on the defensive backside.

Here is a video of the Tiger defense facing the Mississippi State Bulldogs, a team that gashed Ole Miss with their ability to run the ball this season.

Ole Miss will now have to look to add some assistant coaches to the fray on the defensive side of the ball.
