Ohio State Football: Getting to know the Nebraska Cornhuskers
Another big challenge for Ohio State?
As we all know, Ohio State has another Top-10 match-up – this time against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. At the beginning of the season, I don’t think many people expected the Huskers to be a Top-10 team, but they have quickly proven that they belong. Who are these Cornhuskers? Let’s find out:
Nebraska got off to a hot start this year winning their first 7 games. Last week the Cornhuskers suffered their first loss in overtime against WIconsin. I blame this loss on horrible OT play-calling.
This is the 2nd year of the Mike Riley era in Lincoln. Last year the Cornhuskers went a dismal 6-7 and went to the Foster Farms Bowl before defeating the UCLA Bruins. Don’t let the 6-7 record deceive you.
Almost all of those losses came down to the last 2 minutes of the game, but Nebraska couldn’t finish the deal last season. This year, it looks like that has changed.
The Cornhuskers are lead by Senior QB Tommy Armstrong who so far has 1764 yards through the air and 419 yards on the ground. The Cibolo, Texas native has 14 total TD’s.

To compliment the QB and leader of the offense, Cornhuskers RB Terrell Newby has also run for 588 yards and 4 TD’s. The 5’10 200lb Senior is averaging just under 5 yards per carry so far this year.
Newby isn’t the only RB that the Huskers use as sophomore Devine Ozigbo has gotten 87 carries through 8 games this season. Ozigbo has 353 yards and 5 TD’s.
Like Ohio State, the Nebraska Cornhuskers haven’t really found their go-to-guy on offense. Obviously the leader of the offense is Tommy Armstrong Jr., but outside of him the identity is unknown. No receiver for for Nebraska has over 350 yards this season, but 4 of them have over 250 yards.
The number 9 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers have the 15th ranked defense in the country only allowing 18.4 PPG, and have the 50th ranked offense in the country averaging 32 PPG. This will be their 4th road game this year coming off of a heartbreaking road loss to a Top-10 team in Wisconsin.
For some odd reason, College Gameday won’t be coming to Columbus this Saturday, but the nation will be watching this one. Ohio State looks to rebound from a tough loss at Penn State and an ugly performance at home vs Northwestern.
