Notre Dame Football: Torii Hunter Jr. to Pursue Baseball Career
Torii Hunter is a household name for a true blooded baseball fan. To Notre Dame football, Torii Hunter Jr. is the name Irish fans know and love.
In 2017, Hunter was eligible for his fifth-year with Notre Dame. However, the former wide receiver has elected to pursue his MLB career instead.

The Las Angeles Angels selected Hunter in the 23rd-round (696th overall) of the MLB Draft. During his baseball career at Notre Dame, Hunter was known more as a fielder than a batter. Just like his father, Torii Hunter, Hunter Jr. found success through his speed and athleticism.
Although Hunter lacked experience at the college level, the Angels decided they’d continue the family legacy and bring in the 6’0 outfielder.
Torii Hunter Jr. now joins Jeff Samardzija as a former Notre Dame football star playing the MLB. Samardzija was another Fighting Irish wideout who turned his baseball career into a memorable one. Through his MLB tender, Samardzija has played for three organizations and finished the 2016 season with a 3.81 ERA and a 12-11 record for the San Fransisco Giants.
During his time with Notre Dame football, Hunter became one of the Irish’s most reliable receivers. He finishes his career with 978 yards and six touchdowns over the course of three seasons.
If it weren’t for lingering injuries, Hunter would have finished as one of Notre Dame’s top pass catchers. In eight games, Hunter recorded 521 yards and three touchdowns.
The Fighting Irish will miss Hunter next season. With Brandon Wimbush likely starting for the first time in his career, the Irish offense will be looking for veteran leadership. But, Notre Dame and all Fighting Irish fans will be rooting for Hunter during his time in Major League Baseball.
