Miami Hurricanes a Complete Mess, Fall 37-13 at VaTech

The Miami Hurricanes were missing a majority of their defensive line amongst an abundance of injuries and were swarmed by Virginia Tech in the second half as the ‘Canes lost 37-16 in Blacksburg.

The Hokies used a balanced offense and devastating defense to rout the Hurricanes. Virginia Tech threw for 272 yards and ran for 251. They wore Miami’s thin defense down and repeatedly got to Brad Kaaya with eight sacks.

Offensively the story of the night was Tech Quarterback Jerrod Evans. Evans threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 98 yards and another touchdown. He was backed by running back Travon McMillan who ran for 131 yards on 18 carries and Bucky Hodges who had seven receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hurricanes were missing five defensive linemen that they were counting on at the beginning of the season who were out with injuries. Offensive Tackle Sunny Odogwu and defensive back Sheldrick Redwine were also out.

The Hurricanes did everything they everything they could with the roster they had to keep the game competitive. The Hokies took command early and led 16-3 late in the first half before a Brad Kaaya to Braxton Berrios 25 yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the first half narrowed the score to 16-9. Michael Badgley missed the extra point.

The Hokies wore down the Hurricanes in the second half. They limited Miami to 97 rushing yards (not including the yards lost on sacks) on 20 carries for the game. Forty-two of those yards came from Joe Yearby on one play. Kaaya threw for 323 yards, but 203 of those came before halftime. VATech finished with a 78-67 advantage in offensive plays.

The Hokies used big plays in the first half to rack up 263 yards. They ran 43 plays to Miami’s 36 and held the Hurricanes to 47 total yards on their non-scoring drives in the first half.  The Hurricanes finished with 203 yards in the first half  overall and 365 yards for the game.
