McElwain surprises six deserving Gators with full scholarships

Jim McElwain certainly has his hands full. He’s trying to rebuild a very famous college football program that hasn’t lived up to its name in recent years.

Well, the Florida head coach is doing his part to has been working his tail off to recruit some of the best prospects in the nation, and Gators fans are ecstatic with the work he’s done already -- without even coaching his first game yet.

McElwain helped Florida land a top-20 recruiting class in 2015 despite only having the job for a very brief period (he was hired away from Colorado State in December 2014). And now he’s loading up the 2016 recruiting class with some big-name recruits.

But that doesn’t mean he’s only focused on those high-profile prospects. McElwain realizes that he has some players on his roster now who deserve a piece of the pie and a pat on the back. That’s why he surprised six players with full-ride scholarships to reward all their hard work.

That has to be a very special moment for those six young men. One of the hardest things to do in sports is to give as much effort, blood, sweat, and tears as the star players and not get the same recognition. Now, they’ll at least get their education paid for, so that’s one less thing to worry about.
