Maryland football announces multiple new coaching hires, including 2 former head coaches
The first Maryland football coaching staff for head coach D.J. Durkin is starting to come together.
The school officially announced Wednesday the hirings of Mike London, Scott Shafer, Aazaar Abdul-Rahim and Rick Court.
“I’m thrilled to announce four high quality additions to the coaching staff,” said Durkin in a statement. “We’re adding a pair of coaches with head coaching experience and a group of guys with track records of being great teachers and recruiters. Their overall body of work speaks for itself as experienced leaders that have a tremendous knowledge of the game.”
London is the former head coach at Virginia and Richmond. The native of West Point, N.Y., is set to be the defensive line coach and also has the title of associate head coach.
Shafer is also a former head coach, having held that position at Syracuse for the past three years. He will be Maryland's new defensive coordinator. Shafer and Durkin worked together under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.
Shafer (Painesville) and Durkin (Boardman) are both northeast Ohio natives.
Abdul-Rahim will be the defensive backs coach for the Terps. He is making a return to the area after two years working under Nick Saban at Alabama. Prior to that, Abdul-Rahim was a well-known head coach at Washington D.C.'s Friendship Collegiate Academy. He is a native of Washington, D.C.
Court, who worked with Durkin at Bowling Green in 2005-06, will be the strength and conditioning coach for Maryland. He most recently held a similar position at Mississippi State and spent two years at Ohio State before that.
Court is from Grosse Point, Mich.
