Mark Richt will not coach Georgia's bowl game after all

Mark Richt will not coach Georgia's final game of the season, as originally thought. The former Bulldog coach had expressed his desire to stay with his team as long as possible Monday, but has now backed off those statements.

Georgia issued this statement Thursday explaining the plan moving forward, as the team prepares for its bowl game:

Former University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt has made the decision that he will not coach the Bulldogs in their upcoming bowl game. He informed the team Thursday afternoon.

UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity has named assistant head coach Bryan McClendon, who also coaches wide receivers, as the interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, as well as other assistant coaches, will remain in their present roles with current responsibilities.

“I’ve asked Bryan to assume all administrative duties of the head coach,” said McGarity. “This will be the least disruptive option for our players and staff as they begin preparations for our bowl game.”

With Richt expected to be named as Miami's new head coach Friday, the former UGA coach must have thought it best to immediately move ahead to his new home of South Florida and change his original plans.
