Mark Helfrich: Oregon QB decision 'won't be a secret'

Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich has no problem keeping secrets when it comes to injuries. However, when it comes to naming a starting quarterback, he has no intentions of keeping it quiet.

“I haven’t really thought of it in terms of keeping anybody guessing,” Helfrich said about naming a starting QB, according to Ryan Thorburn of The Register-Guard. “I think when and if it happens, it won’t be a secret.”

Graduate transfer Vernon Adams Jr. and redshirt junior Jeff Lockie are currently battling for the right to start against Eastern Washington, Adams' former school, on Sept. 5. However, the real work starts when Oregon travels to play Michigan State on Sept. 12.

Helfrich said that Lockie's body of work with the program will be weighed into the decision; however, he's more interested in what each player has done during fall camp.

“It will be a part of it,” Helfrich said. “Not a tremendous amount more than just kind of a culmination of camp. Being in those situations where the coaches can’t line somebody up or those things that have to be done on the field, that certainly is weighted.”
